Hi Is there a way of lowering the impact of having active BOINC startup apps? BOINC manager for windows: High impact BOINC system tray for windows: medium impact Having them on makes the startup 5-10 minutes longer. Using Windows 10 version 21H2 with Dell something with intel core i7 vpro 8th gen So right now I am not running any projects because of the daily hassle at startup. Why do they even have to be running at startup? Can't they load at first time screensaver runs? Yours, Johan |

Hi I’ll have to leave this to someone who runs Windows but it sounds totally odd. The most I’ve ever seen as a delay due to Boinc is maybe 10 seconds whilst it connects and that did not prevent other tasks from running. |

It's unlikely to be BOINC itself which is delaying startup: the BOINC programs themselves are quite lightweight, and shouldn't take long to load. It's more likely to be the science programs from whichever projects you are attached to that are causing the delay. You could test that by suspending all projects (or all tasks) before closing down one day, and seeing how long the restart takes. But remember to re-enable the projects/tasks when you've finished the test! If it is the project startup which causes the delay, you can postpone it with a configuration option: <start_delay>nseconds</start_delay>Read the configuration section of the user manual for details of how to do that. |

I agree, something seems very wrong with your computer. BOINC does not normally have any impact on startup. That said, there is a setting you can add to the cc_config.xml file in BOINC to delay starting BOINC. <start_delay>nseconds</start_delay> Specify a number of seconds to delay running applications after client startup. This has traditionally been used to delay starting BOINC so that the video drivers have fully loaded and settled down. You might try adding that to your cc_config.xml file and set it to 60 seconds or whatever and see if it makes any difference in your host startup. The docs for client configuration is here. https://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Client_configuration#Application_configuration |

You didn't say how much memory that computer has. It might be struggling with disk swapping, if there's not enough ram to run the BOINC tasks. |

Hi Johan, Your experience of a 5 - 10 minute delay at startup impact is quite unusual from my experience. I am also running Win 10 but with older slower CPUs i5 or older Xeon chips and from the time I see the BOINC icon hit my tray to completion is 90 to 120 Seconds. Do you have some form of Antivirus that is trying to validate BOINC at every start up ? Bill F |

Hi It is Win 10 that says the two BOINC startup apps have medium and high impact. As far as I know only Win built-in antivirus. No idea whether it is heavy handed in BOINC in any particular manner. As for memory: 16 GB RAM and 800 GB free space on the hard drive. Yours, Johan |
