Rosetta is not sending me any new tasks that work on my computer because I deleted Virtual Box. It is not a good match for this old machine. It has run 24/7/365 for almost five years very reliably (knocking on wood). Some have suggested a new machine, but at this time, I don't have spousal permission for new acquisitions (having bought three guitars and a new telescope mount). She correctly says this is a perfectly good computer and can't agree on the need for a new one.

Right now, it's running only Milky Way and World Community Grid. It had been running four projects, but SETI is gone, POGS is gone, Asteroids is in limbo and Rosetta is being difficult.

I need a new project that is stable, does worthwhile work and won't bog down or take over the computer. Here is the configuration:

ID: 3551508 7.16.20 Authentic AMDAMD A6-6400K APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics [Family 21 Model 19 Stepping 1]
(2 processors) AMD AMD Radeon HD 7400/7500/8300/8400 series (Scrapper) (768MB) driver: 1.4.1848 OpenCL: 1.2
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium x64 Edition, Service Pack 1, (06.01.7601.00) 15 Jan 2022, 17:14:58 UTC
8 G of memory and a 1 Tb hard drive.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for your consideration.

On top of those I’m running Climate Prediction, Si-Dock and TN-Grid. Climate Prediction only has Linux work in the medium term so you’d have to run WSL and the other two both have small servers so occasionally have glitches but all three are worthy of consideration.

Can't do Linux, so I will check out Si-Dock and TN-Grid.

Thanks, Bryn.

TN-Grid is not accepting new accounts.

So I added Si-Dock and it is running now.

Thanks again.

For TN-Grid you have to go to their main page, http://gene.disi.unitn.it/test/index.php and create an account using the invitation code you’ll find in the text on that page. Then you should be able to attach to that account - you cannot join from Boinc Manager.

Si-Dock is based at a Russian academy. Russia just launched heavy cyber attacks on Ukraine. Say Russia invades Ukraine and the USA and allies impose strict sanctions against them.
Putin launches retaliatory cyber attacks on the US and allies, maybe using non-governmental networks. Do we have to worry about our computers being vulnerable to Russian cyber adventures?

Am I being paranoid?

Thanks again.

To me, it depends a bit on how good your security is. How good is your firewall etc.

People, please fix your quotes before you post.

Edit: as for the suggestion that Putin can take over your computer via a project within BOINC, he probably could if he wanted to. But then he'd probably use a zero day exploit within your operating system of choice that is unknown by that operating system of choice, as that's easier to widespread use than via a BOINC project that only a handful of people use.

If you want to be sure that even the project cannot do anything on your computer other than do science, uninstall BOINC & reinstall it as a service. This way only the BOINC limited user account can run BOINC and the science applications run in strict sandbox.

I didn't mean to imply that Putin himself would bother with my computer. But there's an army of Russian miscreants out there who are wreaking cyber havoc on governmental, commercial and private networks.

I don't know how to reinstall BOINC as a service. I am ignorant on the technical aspects of BOINC.

It happens by default under Linux but in Windows you have to ask.

I understand that you need to run the installer with admin rights (right click and select run as admin) and then select Service Install and deselect Screensaver on the options page.

Here are the instructions for one of the older installers but I believe it is the same now -

This isn't necessary. A power user and 'normal' admin account can install BOINC as a service.

The installer hasn't changed, only the BOINC client and manager inside the installer have changed considerably over time. Thanks for pointing to my FAQ. ;-)

The only downside of installing as a service is that you cannot use the GPU (and probably not VirtualBox either), due to security measures in Windows with regard to who's using the drivers. The limited user accounts the service installation adds for use of BOINC and the science applications cannot use the drivers (for the GPU for instance) because these are installed under the user account you install with. If you can live with that, it's quite secure.

{off-topic} As are several (government) groups any country in the world utilizes.{/off-topic}

PS: quotes start with the {quote} tage and end with the closing {/quote} tag. (exchange square brackets [ ] for squiggly brackets { } )

If anyone is still looking for a new project, Gaia@home looks interesting. It is an astrophysics project using very precise data from the Gaia spacecraft.
https://sci.esa.int/web/gaia

It is not listed on the BOINC projects list, so you have to join from their website.
http://150.254.66.104/gaiaathome/

There is not much info on what they actually send you, but maybe someone with a knowledge of the subject can jog them.
I just attached an Ubuntu 20.04.3 machine and downloaded a bunch of work units, but they have not started yet.

And it's LINUX ONLY. Been waiting forever on Windows apps but it's fallen on deaf ears.

MilkyWay works well on Windows, both CPU and GPU (with the right card, usually AMD).

Thumbs up to TN-Grid.

Another project not listed on the BOINC pages so likely to get overlooked.

You DO have to create your account by following instructions:
http://gene.disi.unitn.it/test/index.php and put in the invitation code.

You also have to have Boinc 7.16.20

As a minimum I presume as my self build 7.19.0 works fine with them.

Two separate issues.

BOINC v7.16.20 was a special release for Windows only.

There's nothing special about the BOINC code in that version. The vital change is in one of the supporting, ancillary, files distributed in the installer for that version.

IF you are running Windows
IF you have compiled some sort of v7.19.0 code under Windows, to run under Windows
IF you were paying attention to the discussion about that ancillary file, and have an updated version

then it should work. If you missed out on any of those steps, the outcome will be indeterminate.
