I am running BOINC Manager 5.4.11. When I try connecting to any project, I enter URL. Window asks for User Information. I select "No, new user", enter email address and new password. Window says communicatng with project, please wait. Then "Failed to attach to project, An error has occured, please check the messages tab for further details." Most recent message says "01/12/07 7:40:10 PM||Access to reference web site failed - check network connection or proxy configuration." Any idea what I am doing wrong?

Are you connected via a proxy? And what are your proxy settings?

I am not sure. When I select Advanced>Options, neither the HTTP proxy nor the SOCKS proxy boxes on their respective tabs are checked. If I were to check one of them I do not know what to enter for the Address.

Are all parts of BOINC allowed to communicate through your firewall?

BOINC.exe needs 31416 and 80 and 443 opened
BOINCmgr.exe needs 31416 opened
BOINC.scr needs 31416 opened

Are you using a Security Suite (like Norton/Zone Alarm/Kaspersky)? Or are you using a stand alone Anti-virus (like Avast or AVG)?

If you're using the suite, you'll have to Google around to see how to add exceptions in the firewall.

If you're just using the Windows firewall....

Go to the start menu -> control panel -> windows firewall

Go to the exceptions tab -> add port

In the name box type the program name (from my previous post) and in the port number box type the port number (from my previous post also). Leave TCP selected. You'll have to do this for each program/port combination.

If this doesn't work, post back.

I don't have any of the suites you mentioned. I do have Freedom 3.0 installed and running. I only have a dial-up connection and spend very little time actually connected.
In the Windows Firewall, I tried doing what you suggested. But it would not allow me to use the same port number more than once.

Kathryn,

Is that for the Windows build in FW not only needed if you've elected to use the DEP function? The Windows FW is configured to be a standard Swiss cheese, which does not even monitor outgoing traffic on WinXP (supposedly it does on Vista)

Always standing to be corrected :P

Beats me, but I've had a few people who need to open the ports to get it to work.

I don't use the Windows firewall so I know next to nothing about it.

I figured it was worth a shot.

Sorry. I don't know anything about Freedom 3.0 and documentation on the web was spotty at best.

Maybe someone else will pop in here with another idea.
