Milkyway has been very sluggish in displaying web pages for a couple of days now. Ever since they posted about the SSL 1.0 deprecation that is imminent.
It is totally down now, not pingable or tracerouteable.

I am out of work.

Message 106421 - Posted: 15 Dec 2021, 2:48:04 UTC - in response to Message 106407.

Milkyway is back up and all is green on server status page.

Event log says the project is temporarily down for maintenance.

The message from Milky Way administrators said, "Older clients may still be using old versions of SSL that need TLS 1.0 or 1.1. Once we stop supporting these services, these older clients may encounter issues when trying to communicate and/or get work from the MilkyWay@home server. In order to prevent this, you should update to at least the 7.210 7.2.10 BOINC client."

That message was a little vague. And being the Whiz Kid that I am, I didn't grasp what the message meant. Maybe the people for whom the message was intended understood it. I did not.

How old is "old?"

I am old. My computer, not so old.

Here's the BOINC Manager description of my computer:
AuthenticAMD
AMD A6-6400K APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics [Family 21 Model 19 Stepping 1]
(2 processors) AMD AMD Radeon HD 7400/7500/8300/8400 series (Scrapper) (768MB) driver: 1.4.1848 OpenCL: 1.2 Microsoft Windows 7
Home Premium x64 Edition, Service Pack 1, (06.01.7601.00)

I runs BOINC Version 7.16.20, which I just downloaded a few days ago.

Does this computer fit into the category of "old clients" per the message above?

Do I need to do something?

Any help?

You are running the latest BOINC Version, so no problems there and nothing wrong with Windows 7 either

As I post this the website is unreachable.

The problems appear to be with the Milkyway project website. There was a forum notice within last 24 hours that they were still having some "technicalities" after they removed the old SSL versions.

Just give them some time, maybe 1-2 days more to try and get it working. In the time being, donate some time to another worthwhile BOINC project.

This is yet another area where I just let my computers get on with it.

I looked up SSL, and one post that may help is: A Beginner's Guide to SSL

Some way down it says that sites that are secure use https, rather than http, then it says they also show a lock symbol in the address bar.
Right now, my Firefox is showing both of these in the address bar for this site, towards the left end.
So I think that it's working for me.

Website and forum are back up (for now) but according to the Milyway Server Status page that is the ONLY thing active.

Here is the post I mentioned in my previous writing:

Hi Everyone,

I'll be working for the rest of the night to try to resolve the large number of workunits waiting for validation. This will involve the server going up and down for maintenance, and certain processes may be turned off for periods of time tonight. I'm hoping that things are resolved tonight, but it is definitely possible that things may not be resolved by tomorrow.

Thanks for you patience and support!

Tom Donlon

Until then I unfortunately have to keep processes turned off. Take this as an opportunity to go read a book, or watch a movie, or do that thing you've been putting off for too long :)

Or, letting your computer get its hard earned rest!

Must have been for the TLS 1.0 deprecation change. It's back again.

Seems down to me, now. I've had problems for a few days, and out of work for more than 24 hours. I can't get to homepage, forums, status page, and BOINC times out talking to servers.

The project is going to be very difficult to get a connection with and forget about getting any work. Even if you do, you won't see it processed for validation for weeks with their pending validation tally above 3M work units.

This is going to be the status quo until they get that server drive replaced and the hardware is back to working as it should.
