The thread on project outages addresses this. Andy who manages the servers for CPDN says that he is unable to do anything till Oxford IT have gotten their act together and that is being hampered by Covid restrictions.

They have been poked.

There was a power outage at their Oxford data centre that killed some of the network equipment.

Due to Coronavirus the usual support team have been unable to attend in person but the IT engineering support people have been trying to sort it and hope to have everything up and running soon.

See notes in News on Project Outages (always at the top of this board). They suffered a major power outage about a week ago - probably related to bad weather at the time, ironically - and their university hosts seem to be struggling to get everything back up.

Thank you for the replies. I was worried for a bit something more nefarious might have been going on. These days it seems as though Science and Politics are diametrically opposed.

No work for main site, 9 tasks downloading on new computer from testing.

I don't receive any task for this project. The log says "Project has no task available."

I found a thread in the forum there https://www.cpdn.org/forum_thread.php?id=8882 but if I want to comment I get the error that I must have a certain number of points
before I can comment. This is ridiculous!

Is this normal? I have zero points and cannot even complain that nothing is working. Nice :D

The project at Oxford send out tasks when those at universities around the world have research projects that need their services. There are often long breaks when none are needed. This has been posted about several times in the CPDN forums. I have ten testing branch tasks for them running at the moment but these are introducing PhD students to the process and are not going to lead to main site tasks.

At some point there will be more work but I don't have an inside track to the universities who might want it to find out when and even those at Oxford don't often know more than a week or two in advance when they are asked for help setting the work up by the researchers.

The "no posting without credit" is standard for BOINC. It's part of the anti-spamming.
You can still look in Number crunching, Windows, & Linux, for threads with recent posts and read them to find out why there's no work.
(The BOINC work is only a small part of what the research groups do. Most of it is non-BOINC, on supercomputers.
I suspect that the BOINC part has stopped because of the virus, and the restrictions on the one or two staff allocated to the BOINC side.)

Also, keep in mind that there are tens of thousands of people waiting for work, a lot of whom have several many core computers.
These quickly grab all of the 2-3 thousand tasks when they do get issued.
I've noticed in the past that it only takes about half an hour for the lot to go when there's been no work for a while.

That is certainly true for Windows. But Linux is a lot slower. That is because many (if not most) machines don't have the 32-bit libraries installed, and spend months (or years) submitting errors.
It shatters your faith in the ability of Linux users, not to mention slowing down CPDN.

Then it’s CPDN’s job to block those users until they update their systems.

A lot of users set and forget, they don’t look at their results. If no-one tells them they’re erroring out then they just carry on regardless.
