Hello all, I recently upgraded to a new computer, and I have re-installed BOINC 5.4.11 which had been running fine on my older computer. I've re-attached to all my projects, and have work units from all of them, but now the screensaver never kicks in after I have been idle, nor does any work done even after the computer has been idle for HOURS. I can't find any setting that are out of whack. Need help! Thanks in advance. |

Check the settings in the manager for "run always" or "suspend" this might have gotten changed on you. BOINC WIKI BOINCing since 2002/12/8 |

Double checked, they are still set to "run based on preferences". Still can't get the thing to run when idle. I've even added the global preferences override file, and put the correct setting in there. I let it sit for an hour after that with no activity, and still it never started processing. |

Is your computer really idle though? Check in Task Manager if nothing else is taking up your CPU. Boinc's applications are programmed to work at the lowest possible priority. Anything else that takes up your CPU will leave the apps without cycles. |

Anything else that takes up your CPU will leave the apps without cycles. Nothing is running that is any different than my previous computer. I've had task manager open and watch the CPU resources for quite some time, and I never see anything happen other than "System Idle Resources", which always stays at 99. I seriously have nothing different installed on this new PC that is different than my PC before this, if anything, I have LESS installed. |

There are multiple ways of suspending work/BOINC: 1. Project tab in Boinc Manager, select project, Suspend. 2. Task tab in Boinc Manager, select running unit, Suspend. 3. Activity menu in Boinc Manager, Suspend. 4. Right click the Boinc icon in the system tray, select Snooze. 1. Will suspend the whole project, but not others you are attached to. 2. Will only suspend the running task. Boinc will download a new task to work on. 3. All of Boinc is suspended. But for the next 5 minutes projects can still download/upload work. 4. Boinc is suspended for an hour. Network activity is on for another 5 minutes. |

There are multiple ways of suspending work/BOINC: None of those have been selected. The projects are not suspended. BOINC will not run at all when my system is idle. I am almost to the point of giving up...a waste of 4 cores if you ask me. |

Here's a quick one: What if you try to install BOINC 5.8.0 on one of your computers. Just install over the installation you have there. if you encounter any errors, please tell me. |

Here's a quick one: What if you try to install BOINC 5.8.0 on one of your computers. Ladies and gents I finally tracked down the culprit, and didn't have to install 5.8.0. After going through every single item in the Services and Startup tabs in MSCONFIG...I found the cause. It appears to be a new process called "ehtray.exe" from Microsoft for Media Player 11 for the Media Center Tray Icon. Good ol' Microsoft. Anyway, disabling that one process in the Startup tab allows BOINC to kick into gear as designed. Possibly some info that needs to be passed on? - Dave |

Possibly some info that needs to be passed on? I passed it on to the developers. With thanks for that bit of debugging! |
