Firstly, I have scoured the BOINC message boards for an answer to this, as well as the BOINC Wiki, but with no luck.

My problem is that I have three computers running BOINC. One has access to one of the others to control the client, but I can't get the other to work. I've added the remote_hosts.cfg and giu_rpc_auth.cfg files with the appropriate entries, but when I restart the remote client, I get:

Both computers need the remote_host.cfg file. The first with the IP address of the other, the other with the IP address of the first.

Is the one that you are giving control to on when you restart BOINC on the remote computers?

Are you seeing a message like GUI rpc from unathorised host ip:x.x.x.x - can't remember the exact wording.

Check that your controlling computers firewall is not blocking any BOINC traffic.

Don't have to do that with my boxes. remote_host.cfg needs to be on both remote boxes with ip or name of the box that that will be accessing them.

Thanks for everyone's help so far.

However, still no luck. The controlling PC didn't have a remote_hosts.cfg file, yet there is still one of the two remote PCs that I can access. I've added the file anyway with both remote PCs specified in it, I've checked the firewall but still nothing. I see from later posts that you actually meant each of the remote computers - not the local and remote as I first assumed.

Why does the client issue the 'Local control only allowed' message at startup?

I must admit, I don't really understand firewalls too well. I've set up a rule to allow TCP connections via port 31416 - is TCP the correct protocal to allow?

Strangely, I can access what is supposed to be the controlling PC from the PC I can't access (if you follow me)! So the remote PC can control the mast, but not the other way around.

Also, is selecting 'Exit' from the 'File' menu good enough for a restart? I'm assuming that the client will terminate when BOINC Manager does.

Do I need the -allow_remote_gui_rpc option? If so, how do I pass this to the client from thr manager (the startup is using a shortcut)?

If you made the remote_hosts.cfg file in something like Notepad, have you made sure you saved it as a .cfg file? Make sure it didn't get an extra .txt extension!

TCP port 31416 is only used on the localhost. It's not a network/internet connection. It's only used so Boinc.exe, Boincmgr.exe and Boinc.scr can communicate with each other.

Just checking, but you don't run Boinc as a service, do you? Else you need to stop the BOINC service and restart it.
Have you tried a reboot?

I took your advice and checked the file extensions - only then did I realise that I hadn't set the option to display known extensions. Renamed the files, restarted the GUI and all is now working as it should.
