I thought that till it happened to me after a night shift. Fortunately it was at about 2MPH in a traffic jam and no visible damage to either vehicle. - From then on, I normally cycled to and from night shifts. (And a lot of the time it was quicker on the way home during rush hour!)

That validates my point, driving slowly is dangerous, there's nothing to occupy your mind. The safest speed is the fastest you and your car can go, because you have to concentrate hard.

I've driven all sorts, even trains.
Unlike vehicles on the road, trains can't turn left or right to avoid obstacles. With that fact, it is not on a driver's mind that he/she will hit a vehicle on the track. When it happens, one thing is near enough certain, fatalities/injuries will occur.
No matter what regulation is put in place, there will always be those Mrs Dunn states, that will be with us.

They also consume more diesel per passenger than a car with only one occupant for each of those passengers. And they never go between where you want to start or finish. So why do we have them?

Depends on your source for figures. The ones I looked at suggest a small diesel car with only one occupant is about the same as travelling by train powered by diesel. Pendoleano is about 30% better on the amount of carbon/Passenger Km. However if the train is running anyway, the extra carbon used by your getting on it (or more likely my getting on it judging by your posts) is negligible.

Electric and hybrid cars get much closer to the best trains in carbon terms. There is also the issue of particulate pollution, a significant proportion of which is from car tyres.
