You assume we're all the same. I for example could not fall asleep at the wheel. I can't fall asleep in front of the TV. I must be lying down with a comfy pillow.

I thought that till it happened to me after a night shift. Fortunately it was at about 2MPH in a traffic jam and no visible damage to either vehicle. - From then on, I normally cycled to and from night shifts. (And a lot of the time it was quicker on the way home during rush hour!)

That validates my point, driving slowly is dangerous, there's nothing to occupy your mind. The safest speed is the fastest you and your car can go, because you have to concentrate hard.

The problem with this debate is that none of those who fall asleep at 70+ on the motorway are around to join the discussion.

"People just seem to think that they're superhuman and it won't happen to them - that was certainly the attitude of that particular individual that day."
I've driven all sorts, even trains.
Unlike vehicles on the road, trains can't turn left or right to avoid obstacles. With that fact, it is not on a driver's mind that he/she will hit a vehicle on the track. When it happens, one thing is near enough certain, fatalities/injuries will occur.
No matter what regulation is put in place, there will always be those Mrs Dunn states, that will be with us.
One thing this debate confirms, is my favourite quote: No matter where you go in the world, no matter what you do, you will always come across one.

So... for some much needed humor. It's hard humor, but had me laughing on the floor a lot.

If a car had the braking ability of a train, it would fail the MOT miserably. Trains are a deathtrap waiting to happen. They also consume more diesel per passenger than a car with only one occupant for each of those passengers. And they never go between where you want to start or finish. So why do we have them?

Depends on your source for figures. The ones I looked at suggest a small diesel car with only one occupant is about the same as travelling by train powered by diesel. Pendoleano is about 30% better on the amount of carbon/Passenger Km. However if the train is running anyway, the extra carbon used by your getting on it (or more likely my getting on it judging by your posts) is negligible.

Electric and hybrid cars get much closer to the best trains in carbon terms. There is also the issue of particulate pollution, a significant proportion of which is from car tyres.

Pre-Covid figures.
Average rush hour travel into London - 280,600
Average rush hour travel in London - 577,200

No trains = a lot of buses/cars on the road.
Aside from ending up gridlocked, all those "lovely" diesel fumes in the air.
One thing about "professor know-it-all's", especially on the Internet, they never provide a sensible solution.
Another thing they do is "morph" what is said into what is in their heads.
For example - Tacho's in cars suddenly morph into speed cameras.
It is a shame that society today is too politically correct, as if it wasn't they would be excellent comedians.

I beg to disagree - real comedians would address them by a more accurate title so as not to besmirch the great and honourable title of "comedian".
(Readers may use their knowledge of the language employed by former great comedians to guess at appropriate titles.....)

If society wasn't so PC, you wouldn't keep banning me for silly little reasons.
ROFLMAO.
Hughie's Clapometer has just given an overwhelming winner.

It is well known that assumptions are the mother of all cockups.
As for arrogance?
Really?
