I tried to use the account managment with my BOINC client using Seti and climateprediction as projects. First I tried BAM but have the problem that I need to use the same password for all my project accounts and BAM. This is impossible and unsecure. So I tried Science United (because they over a secure HTTPS connection). After creating an account and connect my BOINC client to it two new projects (einstein & milkyway) appeared in my BOINC client. Why? Feels like google, apple, microsoft, etc. I have never asked for that projects. I checked if I have an account there but I don't. So why does my machine crunch for that projects without an account? It feels like that I can not trust any of the 4 offered account managers. |

Which begs the question - why did you feel the urge to use an account manager in the first place? You seem to have a clear idea of what projects you would like to help - just attach to those projects directly, and cut out the middleware. You are recommended to use the same email address at each project (in case you ever wish to view consolidated statistics in the future), but you can use a different password at each one. The only limit is your ability to remember them all. |

The only account manager I have tried is the Grid Coin one and even then, I ran climateprediction.net outside of it. I was put off and haven't tried another since. I can't see any advantage over managing everything directly though doubtless someone will explain to me why they are so much better than sliced bread! (Which I don't buy, baking all my own sourdough.) |

So I tried Science United (because they over a secure HTTPS connection). After creating an account and connect my BOINC client to it two new projects (einstein & milkyway) appeared in my BOINC client. Why? SU runs work in science areas as depicted on https://scienceunited.org/su_prefs.php and with anonymous accounts. You can read more about it at https://scienceunited.org/su_about.php. The account you make at the SU website is for their forums, not for doing work. But like Richard said, why use an account manager at all? Why not just add those projects you want via the Add project... wizard? |

The argument for BAM! (from the users) is that a single administration point makes it easier to make significant changes to a large number of computers on an account. I wonder if that correlates to participation in challenges and events? The argument for SU (from the administrator) is that it attracts a different kind of volunteer, who "wants to help" but doesn't want to get involved in the detail. |

The argument for BAM! (from the users) is that a single administration point makes it easier to make significant changes to a large number of computers on an account. I wonder if that correlates to participation in challenges and events? I hadn't thought of that but not relevant to the way I use BOINC. The argument for SU (from the administrator) is that it attracts a different kind of volunteer, who "wants to help" but doesn't want to get involved in the detail. My argument against SU is that if for any project a computer is crashing all tasks, there is no means of telling the user they have a problem. I get that some users of SU will not want to have to sort out any problems but if something is affecting more than just one project as in missing 32bit libs for CPDN and one or two others, they could end up leaving their machines switched on and doing nothing or switching them off at night and lots of tasks going past the deadline for other projects. |
