Downloaded BOINC last week. After having spent entire weekend trying to remove the program, still unable to. Have tried several things posted on boards but to now avail. Get messages including, "installation in progress," "shutting down BOINC." Currently, can't install or remove any programs on computer and can't shut down computer without cutting the power. Solution, no doubt, is posted somewhere but unable to find it.

Computer is a desktop running Windows XP. Not particularly computer literate but can follow directions. Anyone game to help me out on the phone in return for a package of Zingerman's Brownies?

When you want to uninstall BOINC in Windows do this:

- make sure BOINC is closed and exited (for that, open Boinc Manager, File->Exit).
- navigate to Add/Remove Programs (Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs), select BOINC from the list and press the Remove button.

BOINC will uninstall. Afterwards you can delete the BOINC folder (default at C:\\Program Files\\BOINC\\).

Or if you want to continue running it, you could ask here how to solve the problem you have. We don't do things by phone, writing it down here can help other people as well.

If you require further help, please leace the following information:
- Which Windows version do you run?
- What is your specific problem?
--- Can't install BOINC?
--- Can't attach to a project?
--- Can't download work? Upload work?

At all times leave behind the messages from the Messages tab in Boinc Manager.
That is, if you can get Boinc installed. If you can't, you won't have Boinc Manager. In that case leave the error message from the installer. It shows in the top band of the error message window.

When I try to run Add/Remove program I get the message "another installation already in progress. Complete that installation."

My goal is to get BOINC off the computer. Am running Windows XP professional version.

OK, try to reboot the computer. That should stop any and all installations still busy. Then immediately upon returning to Windows goto Add/Remove programs and uninstall BOINC.

As I mentioned in my first post, the computer will not shut down unless I cut the electricity to it.

With Windows XP it can take a while... but if you wait patiently, eventually either a window will pop up "the program is not responding, do you want to close it down now?", you press yes and then Windows will shut down normally.

And if it doesn't, then open Task Manager (rightclick on the task bar at the bottom, choose Task Manager from the menu), Applications tab, check which programs are running and click on them one by one, then click on the End Process button.

Then shut Windows down/restart it.

The two applications listed as running are America Online and BOINC

You should be able to turn AOL off by double-clicking or right-clicking on its icon on the desktop, then selecting Exit.

You need to exit from Boinc. Have you got a round Boinc icon with a globe or a B in the system-tray, bottom right of the screen? If it's there, right-click on it then select Exit. Wait until the icon disappears and THEN go to the Start menu and Shut down to see whether you can turn the computer off properly.

There is a round Boinc icon with a B in the system-tray. But it is not responsive to a right or left click.

Perhaps you could re-start the computer in safe mode, use Explorer to go to the startup folder, (on my computer C:\\Documents and settings\\user_name\\Start Menu\\Programs\\Startup ), and drag the BOINC Manager startup icon to another folder.

Then re-boot in normal mode, and you should be able to do whatever you have in mind.

I tried your suggestion and it did the trick. Now I'm able to shut down and add/delete programs. I have my computer back!! Many, many thanks to you and mo.v for your help.

It looks like both you and 'mo.v' are not in the U.S.? -- i.e, not in mailing distance of perishable Zingerman's brownies? Any suggestions?

I'm in Australia, and strict quarantine laws about food products would stop it, but thanks for the thought.
I just do this to help. (Also on the cpdn boards.)

mo.v told me yesterday she can use the extra calories since she lost a lot of her body weight. Yet even I am in Europe, so you can't even send it them to me so I can send them to her.

If any, I'd think you should ask what flavors they want, before just sending them plain brownies. ;-)

When staying with my friends in France, the meal that made me lose most weight was a gigantic pile of raw grated carrot and white cabbage, plus a tin of sardines. I was instructed to eat all the fish skin and bones for the calcium. (I narrowly avoided the alternative - cod liver - only because I knew the French vocabulary.) For dessert, an enormous bowl of raw redcurrants. The more you ate, the more weight you lost.

But as my friends are not here in England to see what I eat, I've regained a lot of the lost weight by eating bread and jam, crisps and chips at every opportunity.

So if you post a picture of the Zingerman's, the feast for the eyes will be quite sufficient....
