Just install BOINC manager from the PPA (https://launchpad.net/~costamagnagianfranco/+archive/ubuntu/boinc) and have registered for the SETI@Home project. Everything seems to be working, but I wanted to know the answers to the following questions:

(1) Does BOINC need to be added to my <startup programmes> to start?

(2) Is there a taskbar icon for UNITY desktop manager for BOINC?

By default, BOINC appears under the SYSTEM menu. Not intuitive or at least it wasn't for me!

No there isn't. You can create your own desktop icon by creating a BOINC desktop file. This is my desktop file for the Manager. You will have to alter your locations of where the BOINC files are for the repo version. I use the AIO version.
