Since I changed my isp, the seti@home screensaver doesn't kick in when it should. I see just a couple of very brief flashes of it trying to connect, but then it disappears and I just get a black screen. I already deleted the old file and downloaded/installed it again, but it still doesn't work. Help?

This is better asked on the Seti@Home Number crunching forum.

seti@home does not recognize my new email address (I have a new isp), so I can't even log on to post a message. It only recognizes my old email address, which is no longer valid. I'm unable to find a way to change my email address, which seems to be linked to the the info that boinc/seti uses to id my computer. And I believe this may be preventing the screensaver from working. It's very frustrating & I can't find a phone # to speak to anyone about this.

That has nothing to do with the screensaver.
Logging in to the Seti web site. Did you set a password for your Seti account or were you using the account key to log in? You must use your old email address and password or your account key to log in. If you know either one, you can log in and change your email in your account page.

As for calling someone - forget it - There is no staff to take your call. Seti is a research project with only a handful of people. There are 200,000 users, they don't have the time to hold users hand when they don't keep track of the basic information to log in. It's users helping users in the forums.

I don't know my password or acct key. It says it will email my password to me if I've forgotten it, but it doesn't recognize my new email address and my old one is no longer valid. So there's no way to have the password emailed to me.

So if this has nothing to do with the screensaver, why has it not been working only since I changed my isp?

Joni

Just because you know that you have a new isp, it doesn't mean that SETI knows that. Just use your old isp name for the moment to login in with.

There should be a 'cookie' on your computer that allows you to automatically login, and the account key should be in the account file in the BOINC folder on your computer. This will be called "account_seti.xml", or something similar.
The number is the long string near the top called "authenticator".

Just a thought about the ISP. Did they supply you with a firewall, either as software or in a router? This could be blocking Boinc from communicating with its components such as the screensaver.
Are you sure Boinc is still crunching. Have you been getting new work? Look at the Boinc manager task tab. The screensaver only works while crunching.

The more knowledgeable people in these areas will unfortunately mostly be found in the Seti forums.

Ahem... ;-)

OK, as Les said, if you were crunching Seti, navigate to your BOINC folder (default at C:\\program files\\BOINC). Find and open account_setiathome.berkeley.edu.xml
The account key is between the <authenticator></authenticator> tags. Copy it.

Go to Seti Log in. Fill in the authenticator key where it's needed (log in with account key). Press OK.

Once logged in, go to Your Account, Change password. Fill in a new password twice and press OK/Save password.

Having done that, open Boinc Manager, Projects tab, select Seti@Home by clicking on it, press Update.

If you have other projects, you need to do the above with all of them. The email address change won't propagate automatically to other projects.

If you have a new firewall, make sure BOINC can communicate with the internet on port 80. But since you can post on forums, I think that's working. A browser also uses port 80.

Thank you Ageless, for showing me where to find my account key. I was able to use it to log onto seti@home to change my email address & password.

I do have a work unit under my Task tab, but when the screensaver should have kicked in, instead I got the flashing boinc thing, saying "boinc screensaver shutting down" instead of the usual "boinc is idle".

Anyway, now that I can log onto seti@home, hopefully I can find a solution to the rest of this problem.

Thank you also, Aurora Borealis for the firewall info, which I'll look into as well.

Much appreciated!
