Hi, I read somewhere a dummy plug was needed for GPU computations. Is this still true? I'm running a Pentium N5000 laptop, with DVI external monitor socket. If so, should I get a 4k dummy plug, or a 1080p one, or doesn't this matter at all? |

should be ok as long as you don't let it go to sleep or close the lid At one time there was a program that kept laptops running even with the lid closed. If you do buy an HDMI dummy plug be aware that some ebay'ers show 3 plugs in the adv but the fine print says you are getting only one. |

should be ok as long as you don't let it go to sleep or close the lid On my laptop, so long as I have the <do nothing> option ticked for closing the lid in power manager setup it keeps crunching. Edit: Reply sent before coffee kicked in. Don't know about graphics card computing. |

Closing a lid for a laptop isn't really recommended, due to the heat buildup. I already have my CPU throttling under load |

So a dummy plug is a necessity to enable the GPU? |

Not every time - some computers will run their GPUs without them, others will require them. This is true on desktops, but even more so on laptops, and some GPUs are quite happy without them, while some do need them. |

I find a dummy plug is needed to activate the Intel GPU on machines where the display is connected to a discrete GPU - NVidia, in my case. |
