Posting to BOINC Message Boards on BOINC software installations error


After downloading the BOINC Software from the BOINC website by either save or run, I get the following dialog error box when trying to install it - "Provides all t - Provides all t has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." and then lets you send an error report to Microsoft.

Checking what the error report contains, shows "error signature - AppName: boinc_5.4.11_windows_intelx86.exe AppVer: 10.1.0.238 ModName: kmw_dll.dll ModVer: 6.3.4.2 Offset 00002c8".

Continuing on to technical information about the error report, shows "The following file will be included in the report "C:\\docume~1\\davidr~1\\locals~1\\temp\\ad1f_appcompat.txt".

Please assist.

I am guessing that the file may be corrupted during download. I've never had any problems installing the Boinc software and have used almost every versions including the Alpha testing versions.

Is this a first time install or are you upgrading from an earlier version?

This is the first installation. I have tried several times and removed the download each time. I an not upgrading from an earlier version. I was gathering data until a couple of years ago when I traveled to much to continue with it. The was when the older Berkeley software was running the SETI@home program. But that was on my laptop, this dowload and installation is on my desktop.

I thought it might be a corrupted file but either it is corrupted on the site or it's being corrupted during the download process. I don't know.

It may be corrupted either in your local cache, or in your ISP's proxy cache.

Try tools/internet options/general/delete temporary internet files, refresh, then download again. If you still get problems, see if you can find an alternate download location (otherwise it'll still be coming from your ISP's proxy).

What I find confusing is: what is 'provides all t' ? It sounds like something may be running on your desktop which clashes with Boinc.

I've tried that - delete internet files & offline content, delete cookies and delete history. Then cleaned up loose file fragments, rebooted and tried again. It just doesn't want to install after downloading.

Maybe this is a clue, I don't know, but this also happens on another download I'm having problems with, I get the same failure to install and the same error message, just diferent files.

The error message "Provides all t" is the title of it. I have no idea what it is referring to. It's the same dialog box (different files and message) that is obtained when a program abends and has to close - just short of the "blue screen of death", I guess.

kmw_dll.dll is a file for your mouse. Check first and foremost if your drivers are still alright.

If you don't mind testing something, test for spyware. AVG Anti Spyware is a free and good solution.

1. Launch AVG Anti-Spyware, click on the "Scanner" button and choose the "Settings" tab.


  • Under "How to act?", click on "Recommended actions" and choose "Quarantine" to set default action for detected malware.
  • Under "How to Scan?", "Possibly unwanted software", and What to Scan?" leave all the default settings.
  • Under "Reports" select "Automatically generate report after every scan" and UNcheck "Only if threats were found".



2. Click the "Scan" tab to return to scanning options.
3. Click "Complete System Scan" to start.
4. When the scan has finished you will be presented with a list of infected objects found. Click "Apply all actions" to place the files in Quarantine.

Thanks for your assistance. I already have an antispyware application running in the background continuously - Spy Zapper - it's part of the AOl security package. I don't know how the AVG Anti Spyware would work with the current spyware I have installed. I don't think I can control it, like disabling it, to use another program.

All drivers are installed with latest update & running correctly according to my device manager.

All Microsoft updates are installed and operating correctly. I am on auto update.

My Norton Interent Security 2007 and Norton SystemWorks Premiere 2006 are all operating properly. The entire computer is completely scanned automatically weekly. Installs are treated as "learning" by the NIS and are automatically configured for the necessary protocols.

Another application is giving me the same problem and they are sending me a CD to install from as they cannot determine the cause of the failure to install.
