An upgrade to BOINC a few months ago consistently crashed my Windows 2K system within hours after starting it. I struggled with this for a few weeks and then uninstalled BOINC. I recently downloaded and installed it again assuming/hoping that the problem would have been corrected. It happened again, so I again purged it. My search in these forums fails to find a mention of this. I guess my Win 2K system is barred from using BOINC for the foreseeable future. (My Mac continues to run it without problem, but it is much slower.) Can anyone provide any insight? Thanks. |

It may be related to other factors, such as the amount of ram that you have. Have much do you have, and which project(s) were/are you trying to run? Also, which version of BOINC? |

It may be related to other factors, such as the amount of ram that you have. I have 512 Mb of RAM. I'm trying to run Rosetta, Einstein, Lhcathome, Predictor, and SETI. (At least these are the ones currently running on my Mac. I don't think my PC was set up differently.) I'm not sure about the version of BOINC since I have purged it, but it was whatever boinc.berkeley.edu offered for the current download as of a few months ago (which was an upgrade that through urgent messages they strongly encouraged us to install) and again whatever was being offered a couple of weeks ago. Thanks! |

Hi Grant, if you're still reading this. I had Windows 2000 until 4 months ago and was able to run boinc on it. Two simultaneous improvements changed the machine from incapable of running boinc to capable - increasing the memory from 256 to 512 Mb RAM and getting a better graphics card. I now think that the memory made no difference; lots of people successfully run boinc with only 256Mb, depending on which project they choose. (256 may not be enough for some projects' workunits, but it's enough for boinc + other projects.) So the significant change must have been the graphics card. But before thinking about installing a new card, look at Ageless's posts about updating graphics card drivers: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=1261 Getting an update, which is free from the web, may be enough to make your computer boinc-compatible. |

I've been running Boinc on a Windows 2000 SP4 system since Boinc started. I only ever had crashes when it was a definite unstable Alpha/Beta version. If you still want to try to find out what happened, install Boinc again (you can try the alpha version from the download site, but else use 5.4.11 (recommended)) and when it crashes again check in Event Viewer what brought on the crash. |
