Hi,

I've had Boinc installed on my system for a few years with no problems(SETI since '99). I am currently running BOINC manager 4.25. The last day or so, it's been having trouble retrieving new work from SETI, so I decided to try the latest BOINC version 5.4.11

Unfortunately, the installation wizard cannot find "BOINC.msi". It is currently looking in the default location:
C:\\WINNT\\Downloaded Installations\\{7357434D-AB99-42DD-9217-A81B6A4F94EE}\\

I'm running:

Windows 2000 Pro
Version 5.0.2195 Service Pack 4 Build 2195

McAffee Viruscan Enterprise 8.00 w/ scan engine 4400 and virus defintions 4848 from September 8.

Any suggestions?

Seti is out of work, hence why it isn't sending work. You can read all about it in their technical news.

If you get the message about a missing BOINC.msi file, you need to reinstall the old version before you can uninstall it. Install BOINC over itself and immediately uninstall it through Add/Remove Programs. Then install 5.4.11, which is a good thing to do anyway, as then you'll be using the correct version for Seti's new way of calculating credits based on FLOPs.

If you no longer have the installer file for BOINC 4.25, then you need to manually remove all evidence about BOINC from the registry. Make sure BOINC isn't running, then do this:

Start, Run, type regedit and hit Enter.
Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Space Sciences Laboratory, U.C. Berkeley
Delete that whole key.
Exit regedit.
Reboot the computer.
Try installing BOINC 5.4.11 now to the same BOINC folder you were previously working from.

Thanks for the help, Ageless.

I deleted the entire key from the registry and restarted, but got the same missing "Boinc.msi" pop-up during installation.

I tried to uninstall Boinc from "Add/Remove Programs" and start with a clean installation, but got the same error.

I then moved the entire Boinc folder from Progam Files to the trashcan, restarted, and tried to install 5.4.11, but hit the same missing BOINC.msi message.

IS there anyplace I can get the 4.25 installation .exe and try reinstalling that?

Also, I just read your sticky post "Delevopers request help". Here's my info for the record:

1) OS and version
2) BOINC version
3) personal firewall?
4) separate firewall?
5) networking setup: router? NAT?
6) ISP
7) are you using a proxy? What type (SOCK, HTTP)?
7a) What type of authentication does it use?

1) Windows 2000 Pro Version 5.0.2195 Service Pack 4 Build 2195
2) BOINC 4.25 upgrading to 5.4.11
3) Zonealarm Personal 6.5 (disabled right now, though)
4) Linksys RT31P2 router/firewall
5) NAT, block anonymous WAN requests, filter multicast, filter IDENT(port 113)
6) Cox cable
7) no
7a) N/A

In the past, BOINC/SETI has always worked perfectly through both Zonealarm software firewall and the hardware Linksys firewall/router together. I'm not using Zonealarm right now because it blocks other software I need to use.

I looked on both the download server and in my own archive, but can't find 4.25
Maybe that someone here still has it. But I'll ask around anyway and if someone sends it to me, I'll put it on my ftp site.

In the mean time, try this other work-around:
Use the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility (install and run), to remove the corrupt .msi file. It will probably be at the top and have no name or a garbled name.

Don't remove other .msi files, or you'll have trouble uninstalling other programs.

If that one doesn't do it, please tell and I'll go on the hunt for 4.25 :)

Ageless

I'm out of my depth here,; Windows XP is confusing.
But I have a file in BOINC called:
boinc_4.25_windows_intel86, which is 9,344 KB, and is dated 14/3/2005
File version is: 10.1.0.238

Which is about when I upgraded from 4.05
Is this what you need?

(Rather a nice, stable, version I found.)

That's the one, Les. Can you email it to me? elst93 at gmail dot com

If you do, rename the file please. Take the .exe part off of it and then send the file. Gmail doesn't like executables or zip files, but it seems to work with this work-around. ;-)

I'll put it on my ftp then, in case darkmoebius still needs it.

Hey guys,

The Windows Installer Cleanup Utility that Ageless linked to worked perfectly. I now have 5.4.11 working smoothly and only have to wait on SETI to get their databases back up and running.

No need for the old 4.25 version anymore.

Thanks Ageless.

Yay. Good to read that, DM. :-)

Les, hold off on emailing it to me then. Or break off the transfer if you're busy.
Else, it doesn't matter and I'll have one for the next patient. ;-)

Oh, Seti is giving out work again, but it's being slurped up by everyone the moment it's available. So patience there.

It's nice to know that there's an alternative.
Sorry Jord, I was off catching up on other things, so it (finally) went through while I was gone.
Not to worry.
