It's got a fix for everyone with the new McAfee Internet Security 8 problems. Here's what Rom Walton said:

"Howdy Folks,

I have just released an update to the 5.4 line. McAfee released a new version of their security suite which introduces 'proxy'
server monitors all network communication which includes the communication between the manager and the core client.

McAfee's proxy server was automatically returning a successful connection to the core client even though it had not yet
attempted to establish a connection to the core client. This caused the manager to believe that the core client was already running and so it
did not attempt to launch the core client.

We now attempt to retrieve the screensaver mode from the core client upon a successful connection which forces the McAfee proxy
to actually attempt to connect and get the data and return back any error codes that would have normally been returned via connect.

Please have anybody who is experiencing a BOINC Manager connection failure to update to 5.4.11 as soon as possible. Who knows
how many other security suites will be introducing this kind of feature.
It is my guess they are looking for credit card numbers or social security numbers to warn of possible identity theft."

Hi! Can you help me with modification BOINC ver. 5.4.9. to ver 5.4.11. ?

Few month ago, I will upgrade (reinstall) from older 5.3.?? to 5.4.9. and system shut down all my projects. Then I must download new projects and my work has been lost. Now I wont to preclude this problem this way.

Thank you!

I've never lost work or any attached projects and I've installed just about every versions including most alpha test ver.
Simply exit Boinc completely and install to the same folder.

Oh... I test it with your recommendation and all is OK yet... I don´t know why not last time... Maybe I don´t stop projects and shut down BOINC...

Thank you for help ;)

Download the new 5.4.11 from http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php

While I don't have the problem with McAfee I still downloaded the new version.

To my surprise my spyware-checker (Lavasofts Ad-Aware) reported that the file contained the adware "DesktopMedia".

I expect (and hope :-) ) that this is a false positive, but someone at BOINC should probably check into this.

I just checked with Ad-Aware SE Personal, Build 1.06R1 with latest updates and didn't find a thing. Can you recheck and post the log, please?

I think it's a false positive, but better be safe. :)

Very strange - when scanning with Ad-Aware SE Plus 1.06R1 (newest updates) nothing comes up.

But when I try to start the BOINC setup-file, Ad-Watch (the on-the-fly scanner) gives this:

--start log--
09-08-2006 07:11:52> Harmful process identified(PID:1380)
09-08-2006 07:11:52> This object was found active in memory (Blocked)

09-08-2006 07:11:52> Comment:desktopmediasetup.exe

It may be relevant that I download from this site - in case there are several mirrors: http://einstein.aei.mpg.de/download/boinc/dl/boinc_5.4.11_windows_intelx86.exe

I'll let the developers know. The site you downloaded it from is a legitimate mirror.

boincmgr.exe cascades multiple 'Cannot connect to the internet' messages at startup.

When I make the daily move of my laptop from work to home and back, I change the OPTION->HTTPProxy on and off. When I start the manager at work after I've had my home setting of 'No Proxy', it cascades a flood of error messages. I have to use the taskmanager to kill it and use Boinview to fix it. Bummer.

Open BOINC Manager, Advanced, Options and slide the "reminder frequency" bar to the right. This way popup messages will only be showing with 2 hour intervals. OK out.

Cool! Thanks.

I've always had it set to zero so this is new behavior.

Zero doesn't mean it is disabled. It just means zero minutes between reminders. And that way I can see how you need to rely on CTRL+ALT+DEL and a simple reboot. ;-)

I have upgraded to 5.4.11 to get around McAfee's annoying intrusions, but BOINC Manager still does not connect automatically. It cheerfully connects both to localhost and to my names host when asked politely. Any suggestions?

I cannot find any log of refusal in McAfee.

I love replying to my own messages! :-) I noticed an interesting behaviour. Apparently this failure to connect only happens on boot. If, after connecting manually, I cause boincmgr.exe to exit gracefully, then restart it, it connects automatically. Even if I kill the processes abruptly through the task manager, they will still connect when restarted. I hope this helps.

I am running XP, SP2 and McAfee newest POS.

You HAVEN'T lost all the work.
The BBC version of BOINC, 5.3.19, is a special version, with a few things simplified. One of the differences, is that everything is installed to a different folder.
This is talked about in several places on the BBC forums, including a sticky, which gives instuctions for fixing things for those people who upgrade.

If you MUST have the latest version of BOINC, then find the original folder, uninstall BOINC, then re-install the latest version again, but in the correct location, and NOT the default location. (And don't try re-attaching to the project; you've already done that part.)
Then you'll have back all of your work.

BOINC manager 5.4.11 abruptly started connecting to the client correctly this morning, with no direct action by me. McAfee has been downloading updates like crazy, so hopefully they heard some of the pleas from the outside world.

Maybe someone can tell me why - when I downloaded 5.4.11 over 5.3, none of my SETI@Home projects will run. These are the messages I get:

9/18/2006 10:38:01 PM||Rescheduling CPU: application exited
9/18/2006 10:38:01 PM|SETI@home|Restarting task 14my06aa.7267.26305.36058.3.73_3 using setiathome_enhanced version 515

9/18/2006 10:38:37 PM|SETI@home|If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project.

Hello,
So to upgrade do I just install the new version on top of the old? I'm currently running 5.2.13, but noticed that 5.4.11 is available.

Thanks!

All you need do is exit Boinc (just to be safe) and install to the same folder. Your work should restart at the same place it left off.
The more paranoid among us might uninstall Boinc and make a back up copy of the entire Boinc folder which normally is located at C:\\Program Files\\BOINC before installing a new version. Personally, I've never had any problems with installing even the test Alpha versions.
