Well we actually found BOINC by almost sheer chance... somehow came across the app in Google Play. We looked into it more at work, and figured we could donate computing resources. I (Ryan) have always been interested in helping society, even in small ways. And sometimes get the backing of the company as a whole. I participated in SETI a long time ago, but sort of felt like I wasn't contributing. After finding BOINC and the various projects, it's nice to know we can choose which projects we want to focus on. So far a few of us (employees) installed BOINC on our mobile devices, but we are planning to build a GPU type computer that would run BOINC at the office, non-stop. Sure, we probably won't break any speed records, but if everyone (and every company, organization, etc.) volunteered just a little bit, a lot of these problems would be solved so much faster. I just wish I had found this program sooner, and could have deployed some of our company's extra resources earlier. But, better late than never! Thanks and take care everyone :) |

That's my philosophy... Pretty much any computing device (even really old ones) can make a contribution, imagine the virtual supercomputer that could be assembled with all of the resources that are out there on the net today! Although there are a lot of people on the forums that get caught up in the competitive aspects of crunching, even one host has value. My Detailed BOINC Stats |

Ryan, It can be a little slower over here in getting responses. I'm glad that Noderaser got to you when he did. Just wanted to say welcome to BOINC. If SETI is your thing; then also feel free to post in the SETI Cafe or SETI Number Crunching Forums. As to computers to make contributions with; I currently only run on two machines. I named them Exeter and Prometheus. Exeter is an AMD A6-6400K APU, (non crunching), feeding an NVIDIA GTX-760 GPU. The GPU crunches 3 Work Units at a time. Prometheus is a used system. It is a Pentium Core 2 Extreme, Quad Core CPU, (non-crunching), feeding a used GTX-750 TI SC. This GPU, too, is crunching 3 Work Units at a time. Both Exeter and Prometheus crunch SETI. I hope to see you on the boards there. TL Have TARDIS, will travel... Come along K-9! Join Calm Chaos Pluto is still a planet |
