Someone spoofed a queue of people who'd been waiting overnight for some new gadget or games console or other, by posing as delivery men, and wheeling the "freshly arrived" product to the store. Except they dropped/tipped the whole lot amid sounds of breakages, restacked the boxes as if nothing had happened, and continued to the delivery entrance. The initial dumbfounded silence turned into quite a lot of grumbling then.

edit: there was an and missing

grumble when -Wall -Wextra doesn't produce a warning message on a type mismatch
grumble when -O3 passes in a register
double grumble when the above conspire to create a bug

glory gdb when the variable received in the function isn't the same as was passed in the backtrace.
glory finally finding the type mismatch that the warning flags on the compiler failed to print.

grumble the time wasted.

You ain't lived until you've chased one around in a real time deterministic compiler that decides not to behave sometimes.....

I get that, hate having to disassemble code to see how the optimizer has screwed with it and put it in reverse order ...
So it was actually the statement after the statement it flagged that had the bug, or I hope so. The optimizer decided to do part of that statement before the one flagged by GDB as the offending one. They shared an operand.

or, my "favourite" was when a block read of data from a set of ADCs was split over a few stages, which led to "new" data be randomly used, instead of the snapshot that that was required.

sounds like you needed a volatile to stop the optimizer in it tracks

<looks like this bug is squashed wait for the next one>

We weren't even trying to use any optimisation - just that the deterministic part of the (then latest) compiler decided to move a few memory block reads so they executed faster than we needed, sometimes. It was OK once we rolled back to the older compiler for the module in question - we'd been using that block reader for some time and knew it's quirks, like always having to read multiples of four two-byte words, even if you threw half of them away, the newer compiler was MEANT to allow us to read any number of two or four byte words, but it would re-arrange things to suit and didn't grasp synchronised shared read-only memory "as well as it should have done". We reported this as a major, and a year later got a fix (needless to say, after the project was delivered and running with the more inefficient read process in place.

The code said we had a read-lock on the shared memory, but the compiler "politely ignored" it after the first block was read, as was very clear when we looked at the native reverse assembler dump using another tool which contained only one pair of shared memory flags, and that was around the first read, instead of around the whole read cycle. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

For when your country doesn't have enough 'special days' of its own, add ones from abroad. Like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singles%27_Day
Because having https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Martin%27s_Day on that day isn't celebratory enough.
Or that it's the start of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnival (at 11:11 am)

We have enough Public Holidays and other dates without importing other tuppeny happeny ones from abroad.

Specifically this Sunday 12th, Remembrance Sunday.

No we don't, NATO adds Public Holidays for UK personnel to the normal UK ones so that we are approximately on par with the other countries.

I repeat for those of less understanding

We have enough Public Holidays and other dates (including NATO) without importing other tuppeny happeny ones from abroad (like singles day).

Ever stop to think that those outside these shores think that the UK holidays are tuppeny happeny ones?

That requires empathy. A quality missing from POTUS and others.

Can I go to bed now, or is that pathetic unmentionable going to continue to try to put his spam down? It's not a very bright spammer. Not a bot either, but a real human. Just one with no more than 2 brain cells in the right order, else he'd given up already. He must believe all his crap is still on the server, but it ain't. I delete all that, gone, out of the database. Really a silly twat.

Oh dear, Jord, :-(

It looks as if he took a "power nap", then came back just after you posted for one last round of his dumping. Its a shame one can't find that big red button and nuke him from existence....

As you are a vegetarian I can understand your point of view.

I assume you also would refuse to be in the same room as any farmer who raises animals to feed others.

Also any person who works in the animal slaughter industry.

Which as you are a vegetarian I suppose is understandable.

However.

Quote
“Most people live in urban areas and don’t have a first-hand relationship with nature, much less the ability to obtain food from sustainable sources.”

You obviously would agree with that, and this.

Like most people, I went to a grocery store for food.

By subconscious omission, I thought I wasn’t eating an animal that had once been alive.”

If you eat meat, any meat somebody has had to kill it.

“Game is managed for a sustained yield, providing food for many Alaskan families.

Some hunts are open to the general public, but others are permit-only.

Also, the number of ‘harvests’ allowed can vary.”

Christine works with hunting-affiliated conservation groups.

She also takes part in a state-wide volunteer programme where hunters provide one wing and the tail from each harvested ptarmigan.

Biologists use the samples to determine the age and sex of each bird.

Overall she seems like a very intelligent and professional hunter, who is well aware of the environment.

I see nowhere in this story any glorification of hunting for sport quite the opposite.

Untill the population of the entire world turns vegetarian we need a supply of meat, which however you look at it means dead animals.

Don't tell lies. I am not a vegetarian, but I eat probably 75% less red meat that I used to some years ago..

I found it hard to believe that someone who eats dead animals can be that sanctimonious, so I assumed you had converted to being a vegetarian. It is something you have hinted at in the past

So sorry for the mistake.

To me it makes all of you comment valueless. It states in the article that all the animals killed are used as food.

Many animals kill for food, it is the wheel of life, a sustainable planet needs to keep populations under control.

It is us, the humans, the top "animal" if you will that has upset that balance and we need food, but most of us don't have to hunt for it anymore, we have got too clever and have someone else do it for us.

I too would have difficulty killing an animal for food, but just how long would anyone last if that animal was all the food they had.

It takes many different skill to make up the human race and I for one would not write someone off with out knowing a lot more about them than a few lines on the BBC website.

But obviously each to his own. As you say "that is my personal choice and absolutely nothing to do with you whatsoever". Except you posted it on an internet forum and I assumed you were open to comment, perhaps not.

PS All meat comes from dead animals, not just red.

Seafood generally I quite like,
Also unfortunately severely depleted by overfishing
I have had Calimari in a genuine Spanish Tapas bar, tastes like salty india rubber.
Sorry it was badly prepared. Haven't had it like rubber often but overcooking does that.
