Running the 5.2.14 Linux BOINC Manager on Ubuntu. On Breezy (the previous operating system version) I could easily read the text displayed within the Manager's tab panels. Without reformatting my /home partition, I installed Dapper (the most recent release of the operating system). Now the text displayed within the Manager's tab panels is very difficult to read -- the text characters are all scrunched against each other horizontally.

I've tried all the avaiable gnome-configuration font settings -- none change how the text within the Manager's tab panels is being displayed. What tells BOINC Manager (on Linux) what font to use ? [I want to change the font to something I can read.]

BOINC 7.2.42 (x86_64) on Linux Ubuntu 16.04 (64 Bit), AMD APU 7850K 3.7 GHz, 32 GB RAM.

Only thing I know (and I don't know much) is that BOINC is compiled against WxWidgets. I think the folks at Berkeley are still using 2.6, but don't quote me on it.

Berkeley has tried for the past couple of years to fight that Linux is using all kinds of interfaces for the X window. Since there's no X that will work across different distros, it is very hard for them to make a Manager that looks nice.

And now they have given up and opted for compatibility, not looks.

Edit: I just managed to change the look of Boinc Manager by adjusting the font size that my Linux is using.

I'm using Mepis, based partially on Ubuntu.
I went to my Mepis X Windows Assistant, General, Set relative size of text to 75dpi, Applied and restarted X (CTRL+ALT+Backspace).

BOINC Manager looks a whole lot nicer now!

Oh, decreasing from 96 to 75 dpi makes all fonts smaller (and uglier) but NOT that of the BOINC manager ...

I ask myself, why all GUI apps I have (but BOINC Manager and xpdf) look good or have at least normal, readable smooth fonts ...even xsane and gimp with rather dull text GUIs don't have such jaggied fonts.

It sounds like Ageless's suggestion explains your problem perfectly - Boinc is taking it's font settings from one interface, and you're changing the font settings in another interface. There are many different user interfaces in Linux, and they're all slightly incompatible with each other.

But Ubuntu just offers 1 fonts setting - not many ... are there any additional tool I can try?

After upgrading my Ubuntu Linux from Feisty to Gutsy, the font in BOINC Manager is now excellent! :-)
