I've been running BOINC successfully for months. All of a sudden tonight I get "BOINC manager is unable to connect toa BOINC client. Would you like to try to connect again?". When I select File/Select Computer, Host Name and PASSWORD are empty. I choose or type "localhost", and some password automatically gets entered, but I still can't connect. Help, please. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

Exit BOINC completely and restart it. If that doesn't work, power down the computer and after a 10 second wait restart it. It's BOINC 5.2.13 that does this, isn't it? If so, go for BOINC 5.4.9 |

Exit BOINC completely and restart it. Jord: I encountered precisely the same problem - but this happened after switching from a dial-up connection to high-speed DSL two days ago. I'm running BOINC 5.4.9. so that's not it. Neither a complete exit and restarting BOINC nor and restarting the computer seems to have any effect. Should I reinstall the software? |

Is there anything in your firewall log? Just wondering if the change in internet connection has broken the firewall settings. |

Is there anything in your firewall log? Just wondering if the change in internet connection has broken the firewall settings. Nothing in my Windows Firewall log that I can identify as an effort to make contact. No other firewalls running at this time, but even when I disable the Windows Firewall in XP there is no connection to localhost. This is mystifying. Reinstallation of the 5.4.9 software doesn't help either. |

Pls solve this bug in 5.4.9, I have lost many hours and WUs due this error and Iam very disappointed, 5.2.13 had no problems but still with other things. And its always the same log: *** UNHANDLED EXCEPTION **** Reason: Access Violation (0xc0000005) at address 0x0033B014 read attempt to address 0x00000008 Edit: It must be my old bug (a little bit changed) in older versions as this: Bug #458 (BoincZilla) ***UNHANDLED EXCEPTION**** Reason: Access Violation (0xc0000005) at address 0x0032F114 read attempt to address 0x00000008 1: 12/28/05 20:31:56 1: SymGetLineFromAddr(): GetLastError = 126 |

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. I have the same problem; BOINC has been running happily for some time, now it starts but comes up with "unable to connect to local host" message. Tried the obvious things - reboot, reinstall, close down firewall in case that was blocking it, upgrade to 5.4.9, but none of these had any effect. A post in another thread on the subject suggested starting it in the STart>Run box as "C:\\Program Files\\BOINC\\boinc.exe" -redirectio, but nope, no effect. |

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. I'm now back up and running, and the solution seems to have something to do with a change in Windows Firewall (WIN XP Pro)that I can't actually identify. I purchased a copy of Norton Internet Security 2006 and installed it by means of a download. During the install process, it gave me the option to let the Norton product supress and act in place of any other firewalls that it detected on my system, so I agreed. Once the Norton product started running, I figured I'd have to configure it to allow traffic with BOINC or something, but it somehow learned that on its own, and Voila! - all of my tasks, connections, and communications with "localhost" were simply functioning normally - as though there had never been a disruption. Like you, I had tried turning off Windows Firewall before, and that didn't change anything, so there must be something else operating in WIN XP network security that is causing this. Obviously, the Norton Personal Firewall component disabled whatever that was and opened the floodgates. I'm not promoting a purchase of Norton Internet Security 2006, but maybe this can give the Forum Moderator and others a couple of clues about resolving this with some other method. |

I'm running ZoneAlarm Pro under Windows Home; it doesn'y have an option to diable other firewalls, but I went into Cpntrol Panel and disabed Windows Firewall for the Internet connection and told it to allow BOINC as an exception, rebooted, but nope, still not connecting. :-( I've been running BOINC successfully for months. All of a sudden tonight I get "BOINC manager is unable to connect toa BOINC client. Would you like to try to connect again?". When I select File/Select Computer, Host Name and PASSWORD are empty. If it continues to run OK, I sha;; try reinstalling ZoneAlarm and see what happens ... |

I just recieved an update from McAfee that reinstalled the complete Security Center and I ended up with this exact problem. I found the solution here. Hope it works for you as well. |
